Sony tumbles, Panasonic too reports record annual loss.

Sony Corp. financials are down the drain. The once mighty empire reported a record annual loss of 457 billion yen ($5.7 billion) in its fourth straight year of red ink. Panasonic’s yearly earnings are in as well and the red ink added up to a record $9.7 billion net loss for 2011. The losses are not just due to dwindling sales but a combination of strong yen eating into overseas sales, flooding in Thailand that disrupted supply chains, and the lingering effects from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. Sony Online hacked, 24.6 million accounts compromised and this was … two weeks ago.

Sony finally fesses up to the PSN Outage, restoration in progress.

Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer let slip that his company is producing cameras for the next batch of iPhones and iPads during a public interview with the Wall Street Journal. Apple has previously sourced its sensors from OmniVision, including the backside-illuminated 5 megapixel CMOS unit in the iPhone 4. Sony comes out with a single wire interface, just for that crazy handset you always wanted

Sony has figured out how to replace the 22-wire ribbon inside their mobile devices-the one that carries control signals, video, and audio data-with a single copper cable, capable of 940Mbps transmission.

The new single wire cable will be most useful in mobile devices with movable parts, allowing for more flexible and durable designs. In addition to carrying control, audio, and video data, the same copper cable can also supply DC power. Sony says they’ll be “swift” in their implementation of the new technology, we may be looking forward to more crazy flip phones in the future.
