March 6th, 2011 at 11:42 AM | News

There you have it folks ! Yahoo has finally dropped into the shadows of the search engine world. Statcounter places the February global share of search at 4.4 percent for Microsoft and 3.9 percent for Yahoo. While it’s the first time Google has dipped below the 90 percent mark for a long time, it shows little sign of losing its global search dominance any time soon.

I have to say I am not that big on Browser Toolbars, they are always cluttered and cause crashes more often than not. Bing today rolled out a new version of its toolbar, that features deep integrations with search, Facebook, email clients and more. You can access your Hotmail, Yahoo Mail or Gmail accounts and you can bring in your Facebook network and push status updates from the actual bar.

Cover Story: Google publicly accuses Bing of stealing search results

February 3rd, 2011 at 3:52 AM | News

Everybody knows that Bing doesn’t hold a candle in front of Google in terms of users therefore it’s not surprising the Bing team has been caught copying and correcting top misspelled search terms, with data mined from Google’s results.

The blog Search Engine Land uses the example of “torsoraphy,” which Google corrects to the correct spelling of “tarsorrhaphy” and brings up relevant search results for that term. Once you head on over to Bing and type in that misspelled word, and what do you get? The Wikipedia page for “tarsorrhaphy,” but no correction.

Google Image Search Gets a (cough-BING-cough) Facelift

July 22nd, 2010 at 9:40 AM | Misc.

Google has revamped its image search service, rolling out a spruced-up interface (Bing-alike) and a new breed of image ad meant to dovetail with “organic” results.

Designed to “make it easy to look at more images at once,” the new interface uses a tiled layout that eliminates all that white space that turned up on the old version of Google Images. It displays up to 1000 images on a single scrollable page.

It also offers larger thumbnail previews; a “hover pane” that appears when you mouse over a preview, giving you an even larger preview; a new landing page that appears when you actually select an image, superimposing the image atop the website it was pulled from; and improved keyboard navigation. The service now responds to page up and page down keys, for instance.

“We hope they not only make it easier to search for images, but also contribute to a better aesthetic experience. We see images as a major source of inspiration, a way of connecting the world—and their growth is showing no signs of slowing down,” reads a Google blog post.

According to the post, the update will be rolled out to users across the globe over the next few days.

The new Images Search Ads will only appear on Google Images, and yes, they includes images as well as text. “We hope they’re a useful way to reach folks who are specifically looking for images,” Google tells advertisers.
