Microsoft’s vice president for Greater China region revealed to the Chinese newspaper BJD that the company’s Windows Phone 7.8 upgrade will begin rolling out in the country in the next “coming weeks.” The executive also confirmed that Windows Phone 8 handsets will go on sale in China, beginning next month.

While announcing Windows Phone 8 Microsoft confirmed that previous devices featuring Windows Phone 7.5 will not be able to upgrade to the new OS. Instead the company came up with a compromise, dubbed Windows Phone 7.8, providing the revamped Start Screen with fully customizable tiles along with several other performance enhancements. The new update is supposed to infuse new spirit into Nokia’s previous gen Lumia 900 and several other lower-end Windows Phone devices.
