While we are left waiting for XBOX 720, Durango, XBOX NeXT or the XBOX 360’s successor, Microsoft is readying a media-centric XBOX Lite whose primary use will be streaming video, downloadable games, and social networking apps. It would come sans an optical drive and would be pretty similar to Apple TV. Keep reading for more.
The device will also support the new Kinect which is PC compatible. This is a surprising move by Microsoft, however not entirely out of the realm of possibility. The news was broken by Microsoft know-it-all MS Nerd during a Q&A session on Reddit. This slims down the chances of the new gen XBOX coming in 2012, which has been confirmed by Microsoft spokesperson, David Dennis, who had this to say in his last statement on the topic:
There will be no talk of new Xbox hardware at E3 or anytime soon. For us, 2012 is all about Xbox 360.
This entails from Microsoft’s ambitious dream of making the XBOX a complete media center for home users as well as gamers alike. Microsoft’s partnership with NetFlix, ESPN, Comcast Xfinity and Verizon FiOS cable services, and most recently HBO Go are just an indication of where the XBOX 360 is headed. However, what about the core gamers that built the XBOX brand ? With only one major release, Halo 4, from Microsoft , its core audience is being short changed. With rumors such as this where focus is being shifted from the primary use of the device as a gaming console to more of a media-centric device, we should be worried.
With handheld devices and PC browsers based games matching the graphic complexity that gaming consoles have to offer, one has to wonder what the NeXT XBOX would have to offer to make it a success like its brethren. We would have to wait for E3 for Microsoft to unveil its strategy for the XBOX.
